The Golden Lion Inn at Cannon Hill Park

A 16th century timber framed building, rebuilt at Cannon Hill Park in 1911. A Grade II listed building in a very poor state of repair, and fenced off. It may possibly get restored in future?

Where is The Golden Lion Inn?

The Golden Lion is in Cannon Hill Park. Close to Russell Road, Moseley, Birmingham, B13 8RD

In brief

The Golden Lion was originally built in 1520 in Deritend.  The original site is believed to have been a clergy house and a school before becoming an Inn.  It was moved to Cannon Hill Park in 1911.

The Golden Lion - history

The Golden Lion was built in the 16th century, it originally stood in Digbeth where it is believed that it was the Clergy House and School of the Guild of Deritend.

In 1911, the building was taken down brick by brick and rebuilt in Cannon Hill Park to allow for re-development.

By the early 2000s, a structural survey led it to be abandoned and boarded up due to serious areas of decay, and was structurally unsound.

It is in urgent need of major refurbishment.

At one point the Council explored moving the building back to Digbeth as part of the Eastside regeneration, but it never happened in the end.

The state of The Golden Lion

As it was in 2009. It had been behind scaffolding for years and would get in a even poorer state over the next decade, with no repairs.

By the middle of the 2010s, the scaffolding was surrounded by green security fences, but the condition of The Golden Lion was not getting any better as it rotted away in a poor condition.

As of November 2023, Historic England has awarded The Golden Lion, a Grade II listed building a £32,000 grant to investigate if it can be restored.

The building has been left to rot for 20 years with no use.

The Birmingham Conservation Trust will lead the project.
