The foundation stone was laid in April 1848 and built by Sarah Taylor of Moor Green to the designs of architect Arthur Edward Perkins.

A parish was assigned out of St Edburgha's Church, Yardley and St Nicolas' Church, Kings Norton.

The west tower was completed in 1896.

Part of the parish was taken to form the parish of St Agnes' Church, Moseley in 1914, Holy Cross Church, Billesley Common in 1937 and Immanuel Church, Highter's Heath in 1938.

The church contains wood paneling and carving given by the Earl of Denbigh to St Bartholomew's Church, Birmingham, and moved to Christ Church after that church was destroyed in the Second World War.

A barrel organ by J.W. Walker was installed here from St Mary's Church, Moseley. This was replaced or extended by Halmshaw and Conacher. A specification of the organ can be found on the National Pipe Organ Register. The organ is no longer present.

War Memorial
The war memorial in the churchyard of Christ Church for those members of the parish lost in both World Wars.

The Garden of Rest
Plaque for The Garden of Rest seen from School Road in Yardley Wood. It was opened in June 1953 to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Lychgate
The Lychgate to Christ Church, Yardley Wood can be approached from the School Road bridge that crosses the Stratford-on-Avon Canal (also called Stratford-upon-Avon Canal).

The bridge is quite narrow, and looks nice when vintage buses cross it.
