In brief

The Parish Church of Hall Green was built around 1703 or 1704, possibly by Sir William Wilson. It was formerly called the Church of the Holy Trinity under Hall Green. And before that the Job Marston Chapel and Hall Green Chapel. It was built in the Queen Anne style of red brick and stone.

Church of The Ascension - history

A church was built in Hall Green from 1703 to 1704, originally called the Job Marston Chapel (later Hall Green Chapel), after Job Marston who lived at Hall Green Hall.

It was thought to have been designed by Sir William Wilson.

The original building and additions are in the Queen Anne style, built of red brick and stone with Doric pilasters.

The tower at the west end has an octagonal brick upper storey with a copper cupola.

Inside the nave is covered in a coved plaster ceiling.

Between 1860 and 1866 the chancel and transepts were built.

It is the earliest classical church building to survive in Birmingham.

Before the Diocese of Birmingham was founded in 1905, the City of Birmingham was on the boundaries of two ancient sees. The Diocese was divided into the two archdeaconries of Birmingham and Aston.

In 1907 the chapel became known as the parish church of Hall Green in the new Diocese of Birmingham.

The patronage was transferred from the Trustees to the Bishop of Birmingham in 1933.

The church was given Grade II* listing status in 1952.
