Birmingham New Street Signal Box - A Brutalist Architecture Gem!

Birmingham New Street Signal Box opened at a site on Brunel Street and Navigation Street in 1966. It was in continuous use until near the end of 2022. It was Grade II listed in 1995.

The old Birmingham New Street Signal Box is located at Birmingham Power Signal box, Brunel Street, Birmingham, B1 1TA. The corner of Navigation Street.

 

In brief

The signal box was built near Birmingham New Street Station between 1964 to 1966.

It was in continuous use from July 1966 to December 2022, before signalling was moved to West Midlands Signalling Centre in Duddeston.

The concrete Brutalist building has been Grade II listed since 1995.

Birmingham New Street Signal Box - history

The signal box was designed by Bicknell and Hamilton with Ray Moorcroft, the British Rail regional architect for the London Midland region, it was built from 1964 to 1966 in the brutalist architecture style.

The box became a Grade II listed listed building in November 1995, and underwent a renovation and deep clean in 2001.

The box was one of four power signal boxes in the West Midlands that replaced 64 manual signal boxes, it controlled 36 routes.

The box closed on the 24th December 2022 with its functions transferred to the Satley Rail Operating Centre.

A Network Rail spokesperson said that the upper floors could be reused as a training facility, while Network Rail maintenance teams are based in the lower part of the box.
