In brief

The Midland Railway opened a station in Northfield in 1870. The lines through the station was quadrupled by 1892. The station was under threat of closure in the 1963 Beeching Report. But was saved by 1965. Part of the Cross City Line from 1978. But only platform 1 and 4 in use (platform 2 and 3 are unused apart from an artwork). The line through the station was electrified in 1993. Lifts to both platforms built during 2012 and opened by 2013. The line uses Class 323 Electric Multiple Units. Trains every 10 minutes Monday to Saturday. Half hourly on Sunday's.

Station building

All stations that opened on the Cross City Line were designed by John Broome and opened in 1978. The lift is more recent having opened in 2013. Northfield Interchange sculpture outside is called the All Seasons Tree and was designed by Rosemary Terry in 1993.

Subway

There is no footbridge at Northfield Station, so access between platforms 1 and 4 is via a subway (probably dates to the 1978 Cross City Line rebuild of the station).

New lifts

The new pair of lifts were opened at Northfield Station in 2013. The first lift is close to the Park & Ride car park, the other near the Station Road entrance.

Town and Country

In the middle of the unused island platform (2 & 3) is an artwork called Town and Country, by the artist Rosemary Terry, made in 1993 out of reused railway sleepers. There is another similar artwork in the Park & Ride car park.

All Seasons Tree

The Northfield Interchange has been outside of Northfield Station since at least the early 2000s. On top of it is a steel sculpture called the All Seasons Tree by artist Rosemary Terry. It was temporarily removed in 2012, while the new lifts were being built, and relocated from where it was originally the following year.
